Southampton Morgan Schneiderlin acts angrily to talks with club

Earlier today, Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger vowed to supporters that the club were done selling its players.  This reaction came on the heels of the news that midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin and forward Jay Rodriguez were rumored to be on their way to Tottenham to reunite with former Saints manager, Mauricio Pochettino.

The words and actions of Southampton’s chairman and manager have apparently lit a fuse with Saints midfielder, Morgan Schneiderlin.

The 24-year-old France international watched five of his teammates walk out the door of St. Mary’s to “greener pastures”. He reportedly met with Saints officials earlier today to discuss the possibility of moving to Tottenham, but was told that he was wasn’t going to be sold.

A short time after that meeting, Schneiderlin took to his Twitter account to vent his frustrations:

Schneiderlin joined Southampton six years ago, in 2008.

It will be interesting to see if Southampton’s management stick to their guns by holding on to this clearly unsettled player.

Krueger responded to questions about the future of Schneiderlin and Rodriguez by saying: “They are part of the core that we have decided to keep at Southampton. Jay Rodriguez and Morgan Schneiderlin are not for sale and they will be part of our club as we enter the new season.”

Southampton’s new manager Ronald Koeman echoed those sentiments and declared that the club would be spending money during this transfer window.

“Our summer activity is definitely not a fire sale, every penny of that will be up for reinvestment as transfer fees and wages,” he told talkSPORT.

He went on to say:

“We need to have a dressing room filled with players who want to be at Southampton, who understand the way we’re moving forward, how we’re building towards European football and how we can get there in a healthy way.

“We went into this transfer window without any players for sale, but situations have evolved since then and some wanted shortcuts to the Champions League.

“We had a strategy in place before the transfer window opened that if we could make a deal on our terms and we could get the premium price for a player, we would make the deal. That is what has happened with all the transfers to date this summer.

“Right now we felt selling the players at the prices were offered gives the club an opportunity to continue building a team that will be competitive for many years to come, and not just in the short-term.”

Southampton have made nearly £100 million from outgoing player transfers this summer: Rickie Lambert (£4m), Adam Lallana (£26m) and Dejan Lovren (£20m) have all moved to Liverpool; Luke Shaw was sold to Manchester United for £31.5m and Calum Chambers (£16m) finalized a switch to Arsenal just a few days ago.
