Son Heung-Min’s imminent arrival has sent shockwaves through Major League Soccer after establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s greatest wingers during his time at Tottenham Hotspur. With Los Angeles FC finalizing the details of the deal, the South Korean superstar is reportedly set to break a major league record before even stepping onto the pitch.

Following his announcement last Saturday that he would be leaving Tottenham, Son drew interest from several clubs across Europe and Saudi Arabia. However, it’s LAFC that managed to lure the South Korean forward in a move poised to set a new precedent in the league.

According to Ben Jacobs, Los Angeles FC are prepared to pay Tottenham Hotspur a transfer fee in the region of $27 million. If completed, the deal would make Son Heung-Min the most expensive signing in MLS history.

That figure would eclipse the previous record, also set in 2025, when Atlanta United acquired Emmanuel Latte Lath. After securing Miguel Almirón’s return, Atlanta paid English second-tier side Middlesbrough a $22 million fee for the Ivory Coast striker.

When could Son make his debut?

After a strong showing in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, LAFC suffered a significant blow when veteran striker Olivier Giroud left the club as a free agent to go back to European soccer and join French side LOSC Lille. With Giroud’s salary now off the books, LAFC targeted reinforcements for their attack—leading to this blockbuster signing.

Per Jacobs, Son is now en route to the United States to undergo his medical and finalize the move. While LAFC face Tigres today, their next MLS match is against the Chicago Fire on Saturday, August 9. If paperwork and permits aren’t completed in time, Son is expected to make his debut on August 16 against the New England Revolution.
