Inter Miami have made headlines in the 2025 summer transfer window as they close in on the signing of Rodrigo De Paul from Atletico Madrid— a move that has sent shockwaves through the soccer world. With just a few details remaining, reports have emerged explaining why the midfielder chose to join Lionel Messi’s side in Major League Soccer.

At 31, De Paul’s decision surprised fans, given he’s been a key figure for Diego Simeone at Atletico, making 53 appearances last season. His form has remained strong, so his unexpected departure for a relatively low fee has sparked speculation.

Speaking on DAZN’s Transfer Show, Fabrizio Romano confirmed that negotiations between Inter Miami and Atletico Madrid are in the final stages. With De Paul already committed to the MLS project, only minor details remain before his move to the U.S. becomes official.

Naturally, many fans assumed that a major reason behind De Paul’s move was the chance to reunite with his close friend and Argentina teammate, Lionel Messi. Romano confirmed that Messi’s influence was significant in the deal, though it wasn’t the only factor driving De Paul’s decision.

De Paul joined Atletico Madrid in 2021 from Udinese for a €35 million fee, signing a five-year contract. He is entering the final year of that deal, and Atletico had shown little interest in extending it. With his contract set to expire in June 2026, by which time he’ll be 32, De Paul began looking at future options.

Originally, Inter Miami had targeted De Paul as a potential free agent in 2026. However, with the midfielder eager to leave now, the timeline has accelerated. The deal is expected to be finalized in the coming days. Although De Paul’s release clause stands at €15 million, both clubs are negotiating a fee slightly below that amount, and the player gave his approval to the move two weeks ago.

De Paul part of Atletico Madrid’s summer overhaul

Following the signing of Julian Alvarez last season, Atletico Madrid are undergoing another reshaping under long-time manager Diego Simeone, who is looking to refresh the squad with key signings and departures. De Paul is among those expected to leave imminently.

Atletico have already opted not to renew contracts for Cesar Azpilicueta, Axel Witsel, and Reinildo Mandava, offloading veteran salaries. In terms of transfers out, Angel Correa, Rodrigo Riquelme, and Arthur Vermeeren have already exited, with De Paul close to joining them.

Meanwhile, the club has spent over €100 million on new players, including Alex Baena (€42M), USMNT star Johnny Cardoso (€24M), and Thiago Almada (€21M). As the summer window progresses, Atletico are aiming to strike a financial balance between new arrivals and outgoing players.
