Robert Lewandowski could be cleared to face Barcelona next week

The early diagnosis of Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski wasn’t good after the Polish footballer suffered a concussion and facial fractures during the Bavarian’s DFK Pokal semi-final defeat to Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday.

The initial belief was Lewandowski would not be named to the squad for their Champions League semi-final against Barcelona.

However, on Wednesday, the club’s CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge indicated the striker would be in the team next week after being fitted with a protective mask.

Today, Bayern boss Pep Guardiola said he was monitoring the Poland international’s progress and indicated that Lewandowski immediate future was in the hands of the club’s doctors.

“We will see his condition on Monday, Tuesday,” Guardiola said. “Here, it is the doctor who is in charge. If he says there’s a risk, Lewandowski won’t play.”

Guardiola has seen his treble hopes dashed while having to manage a massive injury problem in recent weeks.

Bayern lost the service of Arjen Robben for the remainder of the season, only minutes after the forward returned to action during the DFB-Pokal semi-final defeat to Dortmund.

The club was hoping to have Javi Martinez and Franck Ribery available against Barcelona on Wednesday. But the manager isn’t convinced either player is ready to play a full ninety minutes against Barcelona.

“[Martinez] has only recently returned after a long-term injury and now he’s back in training,” Guardiola added. “Maybe he’ll get some minutes tomorrow [against Bayer Leverkusen].

“We have to wait and see [about Ribery]. I can’t say any more right now.”
