Rob McElhenney wants Gareth Bale to sign for Wrexham AFC

Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney has made his move in an attempt to sign Gareth Bale. The recently retired forward sent a video to the Hollywood actor congratulating him on Wrexham’s historic season. The Red Devils earned promotion to League Two after collecting the National League title last weekend.

McElhenney Tweeted the video along with a ploy to talk Bale into potentially joining the team. “Hey Gareth Bale,” McElhenney wrote. “Let’s play golf, where I totally won’t spend 4 hours trying to convince you to un-retire for one last magical season.”

Bale responded to the Tweet by saying that it depends on which golf course they play at.

Welshman retired earlier this year after illustrious career

Bale only just retired from the game in January. The Wales international last played for Major League Soccer club LAFC. Bale previously broke the soccer transfer record when he moved from Tottenham Hotspur to Real Madrid in 2013. The transfer cost the Spanish giants around $100 million. This fee has since been beaten by a dozen other transfers around Europe.

While it remains to be seen just how serious Wrexham’s pursuit of Bale is, the former player is certainly a winner. Despite suffering numerous injuries throughout his career, Bale has collected some serious silverware. He was part of the 2007/08 Spurs team that collected their only trophy of the current century. Bale also won five Champions League and three LaLiga titles with Real Madrid. The Welshman collected an MLS Cup in his only season with LAFC as well.

Wrexham’s story has helped boost US lower leagues

Wrexham’s incredible season has been followed from all over the world. Despite being a lower-level team, fans in the United States have flocked to the club. The success story has also helped grow support for lower leagues here Stateside.

McElhenney spoke on the importance of Wrexham’s promotion to League Two immediately after beating Boreham Wood last weekend. “We can hear how it feels to the town and that is what is most important to us. I think this is a moment of catharsis for them and celebration,” said McElhenney.

“For us to be welcomed into their community and welcomed into this experience has been the honor of my life.”
