Rene Meulensteen Favorite to Succeed Roberto Martinez As Wigan Manager

Former Manchester United first team coach Rene Meulensteen has emerged as a surprise favorite to replace Roberto Martinez as the manager of Wigan Athletic, according to the Manchester Evening News.

David Moyes recently decided to let Meulensteen leave Old Trafford after the Dutch coach rejected an opportunity to coach the youth team. Meulensteen had spent the last seven years at Manchester United.

The last time Meulensteen was in a managerial role was in 2006-07 when he managed Brondby in Denmark. He’s also managed clubs in the Middle East. While Meulensteen’s opportunity to manage at Wigan Athletic would be a fantastic move for the Dutchman, I can’t see it happening. While there’s no doubt that Meulensteen is gifted in what he does, whether he’d be able to make the step up to managing at Wigan Athletic in the Championship may be too much to ask.

What do you think? Should Wigan consider Meulensteen for the managerial position to replace Martinez? Or would Wigan be better off hiring someone else more qualified who can try to bring the Latics back up into the Premier League? Share your opinion in the comments section below.
