El Clasico

Real Madrid players confronted by angry supporters

Real Madrid supporters have never been shy of voicing their displeasure when the team has failed to meet their high expectations.

Over the past few weeks, manager Carlo Ancelotti and his players have been consistently jeered and whistled during home matches with the pinnacle of fan disapproval hitting its peak during Madrid’s 4-3 Champions League defeat to Schalke 04.

Los Blancos would follow that loss up with a 2-0 victory over relegation battlers Levante. However, the team’s performance was still far from the efforts which saw Madrid accumulate four titles in 2014 – while going on a historical 22-match winning streak late last year.

Once again, the whistles rang down from the stands at the Bernabeu and the criticism from fans continued.

Last night, following Real Madrid’s 2-1 defeat to Barcelona, fans waited for the team to arrive back at the club’s training ground to give the players a piece of their mind.

According to the Spanish media, when the players arrived back at Valdebebas in the wee hours of the morning they were greeted by a handful of supporters who hurled insults and punched players’ cars as they attempted to leave the training facility.

Spanish television cameras showed fans yelling abuse and punching the car of Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale.

During the team’s poor stretch, the Welshman has been singled out by Madrid fans for a perceived lack of defensive work, and for having what they feel is a selfish streak.

The criticism hasn’t gone unnoticed by Bale. After scoring the opening goal against Levante last week, the forward covered his ears and kicked the corner flag in a show of defiance to the Bernabeu supporters – he would also add a second goal during that game.

Jese was also targeted by angry Madrid fans this morning. The supporters were questioning his attitude during the match against Barcelona.

Vice-captain Sergio Ramos was overheard asking the disgruntled fans: “Do you really think this is the right attitude?”

Following the El Clasico defeat, Madrid are now four points behind league leading Barcelona with ten matches to play. The gap between the two sides isn’t significant because both teams have tough league fixtures remaining before the end of the season.

Barcelona still have matches remaining against: Sevilla (A), Valencia (H) and Atletico Madrid (A); while Real Madrid will face: Sevilla (A) and Valencia (H).

However, Madrid’s performances will have to drastically improve if they are to make up lost ground to their bitter rivals.
