Real Madrid have held talks with Bayern Munich defender David Alaba, says report

Real Madrid have held transfer talks with the agent of Bayern Munich defender David Alaba, according to the Spanish newspaper Marca.

George Alaba, the player’s representative and father, held a meeting in Vienna with various Real Madrid officials to discuss a possible move to the Spanish capital.

The left-back joined Bayern Munich in the summer of 2008, and by January 2010 was handed his debut at the age of seventeen by Louis van Gaal.

Alaba became a regular under former boss Jupp Heynckes and has continued to be a key figure with Pep Guardiola’s current squad. The former Barcelona manager has raved about the full-back’s talent and versatility.

“He’s just like a young Abidal,” Guardiola said. “He’ll be incredible, in fact, he already is.”

The 22-year-old began his career as a midfielder before converting to full-back, and is known for his thunderous left foot and marauding runs up and down the wings.

Even though Alaba is happy with his situation at Bayern, speculation is he could be tempted to leave if offered a new challenge with Real Madrid.

Apparently, Madrid aren’t dissuaded by the left-back’s £30 million valuation, as the club is looking to continue adding the best players in the market to their squad.

An obvious stumbling block in the transfer would be the fact that Madrid already have Marcelo featuring at left-back, and the Brazilian is clearly Carlo Ancelotti’s number one choice in defense.

When asked about Real Madrid‘s reported interest, Alaba responded: “I’m not concerned about that. I feel great at FC Bayern, and there are several important challenges waiting for us in the next weeks.”

It would be a perplexing decision if the 22-year-old defender opted to walk out on regular first team soccer with Bayern Munich in order to fight for a starting spot at Real Madrid.

It will be interesting to see if this story continues to develop in the coming months and into the summer.
