Real Madrid add teenager Martin Odegaard to their Champions League squad

Real Madrid have officially included teenager Martin Odegaard to their Champions League squad for the knockout stages, which are set to resume later this month.

Odegaard made his official debut for the club’s B team, Real Madrid Castilla, yesterday; assisting two goals during their friendly against Chinese side Beijing Guoan. He wore the number 10 shirt and played 63 minutes before being substituted during the match which ended in a 3-3 draw.

Upon his signing, it was confirmed that the 16-year-old Norwegian would train with Zinedine Zidane’s squad, as well as the first team. But it appears the youngster has impressed manager Carlo Ancelotti enough over the past several weeks to earn a spot on the club’s official UEFA Champions League roster.

Should Odegaard, who turned 16 in December, make an appearance during Real Madrid’s Round of 16 encounter with FC Schalke 04, he would become the youngest player ever to appear in the competition. Chelsea defender Celestine Babayaro was 16 years and 87 days old when he played for Anderlecht against Steaua Bucharest in 1994.

For now, Odegaard will focus on Real Madrid Castilla’s upcoming Segunda Division B match against Athletic Bilbao B on Sunday.
