Rare footage of Chelsea vs. Arsenal from 1935 in front of 82,905 fans at Stamford Bridge

As Chelsea and Arsenal prepare to face-off for the FA Community Shield on Sunday, watch this throwback video from October 14, 1935 presented by Gaumont British News. The game finished in a 1-1 draw in front of 82,905 fans, a record breaking crowd at the time, at Stamford Bridge in west London.

Joseph Bambrick for Chelsea scored first but Arsenal’s Jack Crayston found the equalizer late in the second half, much to the delight of the large crowd. Arsenal were the defending champions of the league, still called League Division One, and seemed to bring a favorable crowd with them to the blue side of London.

Arsenal legend Alex James was among the footballers who played that day in this post-Herbert Chapman side (Chapman’s last match in charge was in 1933).

The style of play might have changed in 80 years but both of the goals scored look like they would fit right into the current Premier League systems.
