Bayern Munich

Patience the key for Bayern Munich against Porto, says Thomas Müller

Thomas Müller says Bayern Munich must resist using any “kamikaze tactics” against FC Porto, as the German champions attempt to overturn their two-goal deficit in today’s return leg of the Champions League quarter-finals.

Porto’s 3-1 win at the Estadio do Dragao last week has left Bayern on the brink of elimination from the tournament. However, the German side could progress to the next stage of the competition with a 2-0 victory at the Allianz Arena later today.

Müller insists that his team must resist the temptation to bomb forward in an attempt to secure an early advantage, and instead remain patient and look to breakdown Porto’s defense with their superior passing game.

“We have to play smart, and avoid kamikaze tactics,” Müller said during his pre-match press conference. “If at halftime it is still goalless, progress will still be possible.

“Of course we feel the pressure, we have our backs to the wall, but having a challenge is a good thing for us.

“It is important to stay focused and score at least twice, but we can’t leave ourselves vulnerable to counter-attacks.

“I am positive. A 2-0 win at home against Porto wouldn’t be a miracle, would it? We’ll have the crowd behind us, but it’s down to us to score the goals on the pitch.”

Bayern Munich have been hampered by a massive injury list in recent weeks, making the task of overturning the 3-1 deficit to Porto even more difficult.

David Alaba, Medhi Benatia and Javi Martinez have all been ruled out of today’s return leg, while Juan Bernat, Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben and Bastian Schweinsteiger are all considered doubtful.

Programming note: Bayern Munich vs. FC Porto will be shown LIVE today at 2:45pm EST on FOX Sports 2 and FoxSoccer2Go.
