As Major League Soccer continues to grow and attract international talent, two more European-based players are officially heading to the United States. While the soccer world waits for confirmation of potential high-profile arrivals like Heung-Min Son from Tottenham Hotspur and Thomas Müller from Bayern Munich, Monday, August 4th brought two confirmed signings from the English Championship — one to the East Coast and one to the West.

Atlanta United was the first to make headlines, announcing the arrival of Steven Alzate, a 26-year-old Colombian-British midfielder. Alzate arrives from Hull City, where he spent the last season competing in England’s second tier. Known for his versatility and technical ability in midfield, Alzate brings both Premier League and Championship experience, having previously played for Brighton & Hove Albion.

Atlanta sees Alzate as a dynamic addition who can fill multiple roles in the center of the pitch, offering depth and creativity as the team pushes for playoff qualification. His arrival could be key as the Five Stripes look to stabilize their midfield after recent injuries and inconsistency.

LAFC bolsters its defense

Just minutes after Atlanta’s announcement, LAFC made a move of its own, confirming the signing of Ryan Porteous, a 25-year-old Scottish international defender. Porteous was acquired from Watford, also of the English Championship, and joins LAFC after the club purchased his Discovery Priority Rights from Toronto FC in exchange for $100,000 in 2025 General Allocation Money (GAM).

Porteous is known for his tough tackling, leadership at the back, and ability to read the game. LAFC sees him as a crucial piece to reinforce a defense that has seen some inconsistency this season, especially with injuries to key starters. His international experience with Scotland further strengthens LAFC’s ambitions as they gear up for the final stretch of the regular season and a deep run in the playoffs.

Big names still loom

While Alzate and Porteous are solid additions, fans and analysts are still watching closely to see whether the rumors surrounding Heung-Min Son and Thomas Müller materialize. If so, the 2025 MLS season could go down as one of the most transformative in the league’s history.

For now, both Atlanta United and LAFC have made smart, strategic moves to strengthen their squads with players proven in Europe’s demanding environments.
