Manchester United will challenge on all fronts next season, says Ed Woodward

Manchester United executive vice chairman Ed Woodward has reiterated the club’s stance that it will financially back manager Louis van Gaal during this summer’s transfer period.

According to the club official, the goal is to arm the Dutch boss with a squad capable of challenging for every major piece of silverware next season.

“The squad will be absolutely deep enough and ready to challenge on all fronts, all competitions next year,” Woodward said. “That, as ever, does involve some ins and outs in the summer.

“We have already started implementing our plans, and last week announced that Memphis Depay, who is one of the most exciting players in Europe, will be joining our first-team.

“We expect to be active again during the window, but it is too early to give guidance on transfers or wages at this point.”

United have reportedly agreed to a handful of deals already and have been consistently linked with the likes of Mats Hummels, Ilkay Gundogan and Nicolas Otamendi.

They currently hold a six-point advantage over fifth-place Liverpool – as well as a sizeable goal advantage (14) – with two games remaining on the schedule.

With Champions League qualification all but secured, Woodward said the focus will shortly turn to solidifying the squad for next season’s title push.

“As the season approaches its conclusion, we are pleased with the team’s performance in Louis van Gaal’s first season as manager and are well positioned to achieve a top four finish in the Premier League and to return to European football next year,” Woodward added.

“As we look forward to next season, on the playing side we expect to be challenging for trophies in all competitions.”
