Manchester United v Liverpool, 1985 FA Cup Semi-Finals: Friday Flashback Videos

It’s a glorious FA Cup weekend in England, so it’s apt that for this week’s Friday Flashback Video series that we go back in the time machine to 1985 when Liverpool and Manchester United battled in the FA Cup Semi-Final.

The first video features the first semi-final between the two, which ended in a draw and had to be replayed (shown in the second video). It’s surreal to see Liverpool playing Manchester United at Everton’s Goodison Park, and then seeing the replay played at Manchester City’s former ground Maine Road. At Goodison Park, Liverpool was the away team, while Manchester United were the away team at Maine Road.

Both of these videos feature a lot of talking points. There is referee Keith Hackett who doesn’t seem to call anything. Liverpool goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar who can’t catch (in the days where goalkeepers weren’t as protected by referees as they are now). Liverpool manager Joe Fagan smoking a fag on the touchline, while Man United manager Ron Atkinson runs on to the pitch wearing a ridiculous jacket. And you’ll see plenty of Liverpool’s Kevin McDonald, who went on to be Aston Villa’s caretaker manager.

Plus, of course, there’s the glorious football played on the pitch from both teams and some splendid goals.
