Luis Enrique is counting on Pedro to stay but admits his future is in doubt

Barcelona manager Luis Enrique has once again insisted he is counting on Pedro before the start of the new season which kicks off next Tuesday.

But while the Spanish coach wants the forward to stay, he realizes the player’s future at the Camp Nou is in doubt.

Yesterday it was reported that officials from Barcelona and Manchester United had set a meeting for today in order for the English club to officially table a bid for the Spain international. United are prepared to offer the Catalan club £17.5 million with an additional £5 million in add-ons for Pedro’s services.

The transfer may not be straightforward since Barcelona are reportedly reluctant to sell the forward before the completion of the UEFA Super Cup on August 11. However, United want the player signed before the Premier League season kicks off on Saturday against Tottenham.

Speaking today ahead of his side’s final pre-season match, Barcelona manager Luis Enrique insisted he was counting on Pedro for the new season and wanted the veteran player to stay. However, the coach indicated that the Spanish striker’s future was out of his hands.

“Pedro is a world class player,” Enrique said. “He’s shown how good he is for both club and country.

“Speaking as a coach, I want him to stay. Nothing has changed. Any changes will be indicated by him.”

There is concern at Barcelona that if Pedro is allowed to depart it would leave the squad short of attacking options, should any of the club’s first-choice forwards (Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez or Neymar) fall victim to injury.

When asked about that possibility, Enrique refused to join in the discussion.

“I don’t look at ‘what ifs’,” the manager responded. “Especially when they’re on a negative note.

“I prefer to think that things will carry on as usual. We’re ready to deal with any situation that may arise during the coming season.”
