London (AFP) – Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater has been charged with violent conduct over an incident during his side’s 2-1 defeat at Watford last weekend, the Football Association announced on Wednesday.
England international Drinkwater appeared to swing his elbow into Valon Behrami’s face during the second half of Saturday’s game at Vicarage Road and now faces a three-match ban.
Referee Neil Swarbrick took no action at the time of the incident, but a video review panel of former elite referees decided it was a sending-off offence.
Drinkwater, 26, has until 1800 GMT on Wednesday to respond to the charge.
A three-game ban would rule him out of Leicester’s Premier League games against Middlesbrough, Sunderland and Manchester City.
The former Manchester United player played for 90 minutes as Leicester beat Club Brugge 2-1 on Tuesday to reach the Champions League knockout phase for the first time.
