Krasnodar coach Kononov quits

Moscow (AFP) – Oleg Kononov has resigned after three years as head coach of Russian Premier League outfit Krasnodar, the club said on Tuesday.

“FC Krasnodar expresses its special gratitude and appreciation to Kononov for his work with the club,” said a statement on the club’s official website, failing to give a reason for his resignation.

Former Russian international midfielder Igor Shalimov was named as caretaker coach.

“It was a complete surprise for me,” Shalimov told Sport Express daily.

“I don’t know the reasons for his decision. We’re in the middle of the table after just six matches. Anyway, I’ll do my best to improve the team’s results.”

Krasnodar are seventh in the Russian league, eight points behind leaders Spartak Moscow.

Kononov, 50, who took over Krasnodar in August 2013, led the club into the Russian Cup final in 2014.

He becomes the fourth Russian top-flight manager to leave his post this season.
