Fabian Johnson has become the sixth American to score in UEFA Champions League, opening the scoring for Borussia Moenchengladbach in the 18th minute today in Germany against defending Serie A champions Juventus:
Gladbach came into the day in last place in Group E, six points behind group-leading Juve and two points behind third-place Sevilla. With the goal, however, Andre Schubert’s team in position to extend their unbeaten streak to eight, having lost only once since Lucien Favre resigned as head coach in September.
For Johnson, it was his first Champions League goal, one that put him in the same company as DaMarcus Beasley, Maurice Edu, Jovan Kirovski, Sacha Klejstan and Jermaine Jones – the only Americans to score in UEFA Champions League.
