Emmanuel Adebayor has been left out of Tottenham’s 25-man squad for the Barclays Premier League. The 31-year-old former Arsenal, Manchester City and Real Madrid forward had been expected to leave the club before the transfer deadline, but was unable to secure a move away from Spurs. The decision leaves the former Togo international facing the prospect of no regular first-team football for the rest of the year.
Tottenham’s decision to axe Adebayor comes even after missing out on the signing of West Brom striker Saido Berahino. They have already spent heavily elsewhere on support for Harry Kane, however, with South Korea’s Son Heung-min arriving from Bayer Leverkusen for £22 million and Cameroon’s Clinton N’jie for £10 million from Lyon.

Adebayor has been a peripheral figure at White Hart Lane since the departure in 2012 of Harry Redknapp as manager. Redknapp brought Adebayor to Spurs during his last season at the club but, under his successor, Andre Villas-Boas, the Togan lost his first-team place. He was again a regular while Tim Sherwood was caretaker manager, before Mauricio Pochettino’s appointment, and Kane’s form last season again meant his chances were limited.
Reported interest from both West Ham and Villa, now managed by Sherwood, came to nothing before the conclusion of the summer transfer window. Adebayor is likely to continue earning his reported £100,000-a-week salary at least until January, which is when he will next be available to leave Spurs on a permanent basis.
