David De Gea will cause a domino effect if he moves to Real Madrid

david-de-gea

Following a superb fourth season with Manchester United, goalkeeper David De Gea is being heavily linked with a move back to his home country of Spain, with Real Madrid looking to snap up the Spaniard.  While some have suggested that a deal between De Gea and Real Madrid has already been completed, nothing has been officially announced by either team as of press time.

The 24-year-old shot-stopper has been offered a fresh deal from the Red Devils, reportedly worth an astounding £200,000-a-week.  However, it is thought that De Gea has yet to make a decision on his future.

If, and yes, that’s a big if, De Gea was to make the move to Madrid, it will most likely start a goalkeeping domino effect between both teams involved, as well as multiple other clubs. With this in mind, let’s take a look at six different goalkeepers that could be set for a change of scenery this summer.

Iker Casillas

With a potential Real Madrid move for David De Gea, there would be a surplus of keepers at the Bernabeu.  Casillas, who has been with Los Blancos his entire career, is thought to be set for a move if Real Madrid were to bring in a new shot-stopper.  The 34-year-old Spain international is a Madrid legend, but has been the target of the boo boys as of late.

The relationship between Casillas and the Real Madrid supporters came to a head earlier in the month, when the goalkeeper supposedly muttered, “That’s enough, for f***’s sake”, after being the subject of jeers.  Manchester United and Arsenal have been rumored to want the player; however, a backup role at Madrid could also be in the cards.

Keylor Navas

Reports have suggested that although the Costa Rica international just arrived at Real Madrid last summer, he will leave the Bernabeu this summer if the Spanish giants sign De Gea and keep Casillas.

Navas only made six La Liga starts this season, and 11 total appearances for the league runners-up.  Arsenal have reported interest in Navas, but other teams would be in line to sign the 28-year-old goalkeeper if De Gea signs for Madrid.

Petr Čech

The longtime Chelsea player has been relegated to the bench ever since Thibaut Courtois returned from loan at Atletico Madrid.  Although, he only made six Premier League appearances during the 2014/15 campaign, the 33-year-old Czech Republic international is still a very solid keeper and most top teams would love to have him between the posts.

Čech wants more playing time and a move away from the London-based team seems extremely likely this summer; however, he may not even have to sell his house after switching clubs.  The Gunners have admired Čech for years and a move to Arsenal could very well happen.  Manchester United, Paris Saint Germain, and Besiktas have all recently been linked with the Chelsea keeper as well.

Wojciech Szczęsny

Although Szczęsny once showed promise as Arsenal’s number one keeper, the now 25-year-old has seen a string of subpar performances (as well as a few off the field incidents) force the Gunners to turn to David Ospina.

Szczęsny still has a contract with the Gunners until the summer of 2018, but it looks somewhat likely that his days may be numbered in an Arsenal kit.  Club manager Arsene Wenger could send the Poland international on loan, with Southampton rumored to be a potential destination; however, a permanent switch could also be in the works.

Bernd Leno

Bayer Leverkusen keeper Bernd Leno is somewhat of a rising star in the soccer world. While he does not have a senior international cap just yet, the 23-year-old German has been fantastic for the fourth placed team in the Bundesliga.

Leno helped shutout German giants Bayern Munich twice over the last month (once in league play and once during a cup match).  Leverkusen want to hold on to their budding star, but top teams such as Arsenal, Manchester United, and Real Madrid have all reportedly shown interest in Leno.

Asmir Begović

With one year remaining on his current contract, Asmir Begović could be on is way out of Stoke City.  Although manager Mark Hughes recently stated his wishes for the Bosnia and Herzegovina international to stay with the Potters, the 27-year-old may have different plans.

When ask earlier in the week about his future, Begović claimed, “My future? I couldn’t tell you 100 percent at the moment.  But it’s about trying to be ambitious as possible, to win and compete for as much as possible, because I’m going to be 28, not 20.  I want to be part of a successful team and achieve things.  I want to have some special things to look back on when I finish football.”

“So that’s the situation; we will have an honest discussion and I’ll be very clear with my opinion and we’ll see what the options are on both sides.”

Arsenal, Manchester United, and Chelsea could look to Begović to fill their goalkeeping void.
