Burnley sign Liverpool's Flanagan on loan

London (AFP) – Highly regarded full-back Jon Flanagan will get the chance of regular first-team football after signing a season-long loan with Premier League newboys Burnley from Liverpool on Friday.

The 23-year-old, who has one England cap to his name, earned the nickname ‘Scouse Cafu’ after the legendary Brazilian, and had fought his way back into the first team at the end of last season following a 20-month absence which saw him undergo two knee operations.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp rates him highly and made him captain for the Premier League match in March against Southampton.

However, Klopp believes Flanagan — who has made over 50 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool since making his debut aged just 18 — would be better served to go on loan and be guaranteed first-team action.

Flanagan is only Burnley’s third signing of the close season — the others being Icelandic international midfielder Johann Berg Gudmundsson and goalkeeper Nick Pope.

Flanagan could well have a quick reunion with Liverpool as the Clarets host Klopp’s side in the second game of the upcoming campaign.
