Arsene Wenger looks set to agree the £3million purchase of Nice and Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina, according to multiple sources. The deal has been reported on for a lengthy period of time and now it appears that the Gunners will be officially announcing the goalkeeper in the near future.
Ospina, 25, played in all of Colombia’s World Cup games in an impressive run for the South Americans, before being eliminated by Brazil in the quarter finals. Though perhaps not in the spotlight as much as the likes of Keylor Navas and Guillermo Ochoa, he was every bit as impressive in Brazil.
Ospina has made 177 appearances for OGC Nice in France over the last 6 years as well as 44 appearances for his country. After the departure of Lukasz Fabianski to Swansea City, Wenger will be looking for a keeper to challenge Wojciech Szczesny for the #1 spot at Arsenal, and Ospina has more than enough talent to do just that.
This will be Arsenal’s third signing of the summer transfer window, after signing fellow South American Alexis Sanchez in a £31million deal from Barcelona and France international Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle. Doing business early in the summer window hasn’t been characteristic of Arsenal in most of the last few years, but Wenger seems to be approaching deals decisively this summer.
Though interest in Real Madrid midfielder and World Cup winner Sami Khedira has seemed to cool due to a dispute over wage demands, Morgan Schneiderlin of Southampton and William Carvalho of Benfica have both been linked recently, as well as Manchester United centre back pairing Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, as a makeweight in the potential Thomas Vermaelen deal.
