Algeria advanced to the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time in the nation’s history with a 1-1 Group H draw against Russia. Fabio Capello’s Russian side was highly touted entering the tournament but ultimately underwhelmed.
By contrast, Algeria who failed to record a goal in all three group games in 2010 were a high-flying side in this World Cup. The Algerians recorded six goals in three group games, and became the first side from North Africa to advance to the knockout stages since 1986 when Morocco achieved the feat.
Russia, the host of the next World Cup heads home early, while Algeria faces Germany on Monday in the Round of 16.
