Spanish coach Garrido close to historic African success

Johannesburg (AFP) – Spaniard Juan Carlos Garrido will become the first coach to win the CAF Confederation Cup with different clubs if Raja Casablanca of Morocco lift the trophy in Kinshasa Sunday.

Raja are well placed to succeed having defeated V Club of the Democratic Republic of Congo 3-0 in Casablanca last Sunday in the first leg of the final.

Garrido, who began coaching in Spain when only 24 years old, guided Al Ahly of Egypt to victory over Sewe San Pedro of the Ivory Coast in the 2014 Confederation Cup title decider.

The 49-year-old coached in Spain, Belgium, Egypt and Saudi Arabia before joining Raja, who are seeking a sixth African title in various competitions, last year.

Veteran coach Faouzi Benzarti has won the Confederation Cup twice, but with the same Tunisian club, Etoile Sahel.
