Moscow (AFP) – Portuguese striker Eder, who scored the winning goal in the Euro 2016 final, has joined Lokomotiv Moscow on a season-long loan from French club Lille, the club said on Wednesday.
Eder, 29, joined the Ligue 1 side in January 2016 from Premier League Swansea and his six goals in that first season helped Lille finish fifth, securing him a call-up to the Portuguese squad for Euro 2016.
In the final against France, Eder’s long-range shot in extra time landed a first European crown for Portugal as the injured Cristiano Ronaldo watched from the sidelines.
But he fell out of favour in his second season at Lille, scoring just six times in 31 appearances and new coach Marcelo Bielsa made it clear he was not part of his plans.
Eder said he was happy to join Lokomotiv and had been guided by the advice of his international teammate Manuel Fernandes.
“He is waiting for me to arrive. Manuel told me that Lokomotiv always fight to win and that the players like creativity and attacking football. That’s good news,” Eder said in a statement issued by Lokomotiv.
The club are second in the Russian Premier League table after seven matches as they bid to win a first title since 2004.
