FOX Sports has acquired the English-language TV rights to 25 upcoming Mexico national team ‘home’ games from 2016 through 2018, according to a report in The New York Times.
FOX, who replaces previous rights holder ESPN, acquired the rights from Univision Deportes for an undisclosed sum. The matches will include ‘home’ friendlies and World Cup qualifiers.
Most of Mexico’s home friendlies are played in venues across the United States where the national team has huge followings.

“We get to tell the narrative of the Mexican national team through our tournaments such as Copa América Centenario this summer, and it is going to be the representative of the Concacaf region in the Confederations Cup in 2017,” David Nathanson, the head of business operations for FOX Sports. “This allows us to complete the story of arguably the team with the second-largest fan base in the United States.”
If the United States and Mexico advance as expected to the final round of regional World Cup qualifying, their showcase game in Mexico City will be carried by FOX Sports 1. The three-year deal will feature 10 Mexican national team games this year and next year and five in 2018, The New York Times added.
