On my recent journey to Mexico, I did a double-take when I walked into a souvenir shop in Cozumel to find a stack of Pringles potato chip canisters. One of which featured Peter Crouch, the man, the myth, the legend. The same bloke, of course, that The Guardian’s sports editor Sean Ingle claims walked into a fast food restaurant, demanded free nachos and proclaimed to himself, “Crouchie’s having his nachos.”
In this particular instance, Crouchie’s having his pringles. The advertising campaign with Crouch (and Torres, Fabregas, Kuyt and Anelka) is not new. It was launched before the 2010 World Cup. However, I thought it bizarre that the Mexican branch of Procter & Gamble (makers of Pringles) would think that Crouchie would go down well south of the border. At the same time, that canister of Pringles pictured above is still on the shelf in Cozumel and may have been sitting there for more than nine months!
Two more things to note in the above photo are Crouchie’s amazing strength at holding up that massive bowl or hunk of cheese in his right hand. And, at the same time, he’s making his infamous robotic moves with his right arm.
