Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says that midfielder Mesut Ozil will bounce back from his penalty miss, but he could end up being like Dennis Bergkamp where he won’t take a penalty again.
Ozil’s penalty miss against Bayern Munich was a turning point in the game against the current UEFA Champions League champions, in a match where Arsenal were on top and looking very likely to take an early lead.
Regarding the penalty miss and allowing Ozil to recover from it, Wenger said:
“I believe that at the moment I have to let him recover from that. I have seen this before with Bergkamp, missing in 1999 [in the FA Cup semi-final replay against Manchester United] and refusing after to take any penalties. [But] He gets a statue today.
It’s part of the job to deal with disappointment and prove you can get on with it. He apologized after the game. I don’t think people are shocked he missed, it’s just he takes his penalties in an unusual way.”
