Messi gets AFA president’s support for Newell’s return as Inter Miami future hangs in the balance

Argentine star Lionel Messi has yet to extend his contract in South Florida, which is set to expire at the end of the 2025 MLS season. He holds an option to remain in the United States for another 12 months, potentially carrying him through to the next FIFA World Cup finals.

Inter Miami remains optimistic about reaching an agreement, but there are increasing rumors about potential moves elsewhere. Reports suggest that clubs in Saudi Arabia’s Pro League are preparing to reunite the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner with his longtime rival and Al-Nassr talisman, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Speculation is also growing about a return to where it all began. Messi has never hidden his desire to make a competitive appearance for Newell’s Old Boys before hanging up his boots for good.

His close friend and fellow World Cup champion, Ángel Di María, has made a similar move — the veteran winger returned to Rosario Central at age 37. Claudio Tapia, president of the Argentine Football Association (AFA), attended Di María’s emotional unveiling and believes Messi could follow a similar path.

When asked by TNT Sports whether Messi might return home to complete the incredible arc of his career, Tapia said: “I hope so.” Newell’s head coach Cristian Fabbiani has previously expressed interest in bringing Messi back with a short-term four-month deal.

As of now, Messi has offered little clarity about his long-term future. The South American icon is currently enjoying a historic run in MLS, having scored braces in five consecutive matches.
