Mbappé injury could force no-show against Bayern, says report

Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappé left Wednesday’s match against Montpellier due to an injury, putting his status for a Champions League clash with Bayern Munich in question. The French forward only lasted 21 minutes on the pitch before departing. Prior to the injury, Mbappé also missed a twice-taken penalty earlier in the night.

Montpellier goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte saved the first spot kick. However, Mbappé received another crack after an infraction by the opposing team. Then, the French superstar had another penalty saved onto the post. The rebound came to Mbappé, who sent the ball over the crossbar of the empty net.

Tough night for French superstar

Following the series of unfortunate events, the injury occurred after Montpellier midfielder Leo Leroy tackled Mbappe. The 24-year-old forward limped off while appearing to hold his hamstring after the tackle. PSG head coach Christophe Galtier could not confirm exactly that part of Mbappe’s body was injured. However, he did say that he did not feel it was serious.

“He took a knock to the back of the knee or the back of the thigh, so we’ll see,” Galtier stated. “I’m not too worried. Is it a bruise? Is it a contusion? We don’t know yet. With the run of matches we don’t want to take risks with a very busy fixture list, but it doesn’t appear that serious.”

Injury could rule out Mbappé from Bayern tie

Nevertheless, a source with ESPN is claiming that there is concern regarding the injury within the PSG camp. Despite Galtier playing down the extent of the knock, it is believed that Mbappe could in fact miss the first leg of a Champions League matchup with Bayern Munich.

The two massive clubs meet on February 14th, less than two weeks from the Montpellier match. Mbappe will reportedly have a scan on Thursday to help determine the seriousness of the injury. Along with the Bayern fixture, PSG also have big games against Marseille and Monaco inside the next two weeks as well.
