Manchester United star becomes free agent: Ryan Reynolds’ Wrexham leads interest amid big European ambitions

Christian Eriksen’s story sounds like something out of a movie—not only because of his time in elite soccer, but also due to his incredible comeback from a life-threatening moment. After starring for Tottenham and playing a key role for Denmark, his life changed dramatically when he suffered cardiac arrest during a Euro 2021 match against Finland. Against all odds, the midfielder returned to compete at the highest level.

Post-recovery, Eriksen played for Inter Milan, Brentford, and Manchester United, where he featured in several Premier League games last season. However, his contract was not renewed, and he’s now a free agent. In this context, an unexpected offer has emerged: a proposal from Wrexham, the Welsh club co-owned by Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds.

According to The Athletic, the Championship side—fresh off a historic promotion—wants to add Eriksen to their ambitious project. Just a few years ago, Wrexham was in England’s fifth tier. Now, the club aims to continue its rise by signing top-tier talent.

Eriksen’s camp hasn’t confirmed any serious negotiations. In an interview with Mail Sport, his agent acknowledged that the project “is impressive” but added: “Christian still wants to play in a top-flight league.” That said, he left the door open: “There are some ongoing talks, but it has to make sense for both parties.”

Wrexham has reinvented itself in recent years under Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. The club has already signed several players this summer, including Lewis O’Brien, Josh Windass, Dani Ward, Ryan Hardie, George Thomason, and Liberato Cacace—the latter acquired for £2.5 million, the most expensive transfer in the club’s history.

After 43 years, Wrexham is back in the second tier of English soccer. The transformation began in 2020, when the actors purchased the team and documented the journey in Welcome to Wrexham, a streaming sensation.

With millions of new fans and solid financial backing, Wrexham is eager to bring in players who can elevate the team. Eriksen, experienced and currently unattached, fits the profile perfectly.
