Manchester United will have been flabbergasted by Manchester City’s shock last minute, albeit uncompleted, move for Dimitri Berbatov. The Bulgarian forward was all set to be the spearhead of what would have been the most potent striking force in the Premiership.
However as City’s bid was accepted United are in a whole lot of bother; with no out and out, established centre forward to speak of, Ferguson will be forced to push either Rooney or Tevez out of their second striker position and into the goal poacher’s position. By doing this he will cut down the chosen player’s impact immensely and even then the ability to score goals from half-chances, which would be taken as a given with a player like Berbatov, will be greatly diminshed. The other option is to bring out a young or reserve player to fill the position; this would leave Rooney and Tevez to do what they do they do best, but again the likelyhood is that many of the difficult chances would be missed.
With the transfer window closing tonight United are running out of options; the failure to capture Berbatov may make for a difficult season for the red side of Manchester.
