Lionel Messi headlines Argentina’s preliminary squad for the upcoming double round of the South American World Cup Qualifiers. The captain, who almost missed the the clashes ahead Colombia and Chile due to an adductor injury suffered with Inter Miami, is now fully fit and ready to rejoin the national team. His comeback will be crucial as Argentina, already qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, faces Venezuela (September 4) and Ecuador (September 9).

Messi has looked sharp in the United States after regaining form and fitness, and his return gives Lionel Scaloni’s side a major boost. The star forward will once again lead the reigning world champions in what promises to be a highly competitive window of qualifiers.

Messi isn’t the only one making his way back. Alejandro Garnacho (Manchester United) and Valentín Barco (Racing Strasbourg) are also included in the list. Both youngsters were considered big bets by Scaloni, but neither has yet fully consolidated their role in the senior team. Their return provides Argentina with fresh options on the flanks, especially as both are enjoying solid minutes at club level.

Garnacho has gained more prominence despite reported tensions with coach Ruben Amorim, while Barco has relaunched his career in France, becoming a vital piece for Strasbourg on the left wing.

New faces and notable absences

Alongside familiar names, Scaloni’s pre-list includes some surprises. Juan Foyth (Villarreal), Nicolás Domínguez (Nottingham Forest), and Valentín Castellanos (Lazio) all received call-ups thanks to strong seasons abroad. However, players like Santiago Castro and Benjamín Domínguez, recent Coppa Italia winners with Bologna, did not make the cut this time.

Meanwhile, injuries continue to play a role in the coach’s decisions. Gonzalo Montiel remains sidelined with a muscle tear, while Paulo Dybala is still recovering from tendon surgery and has not played for Roma since March. These absences underline the importance of Scaloni’s flexibility in calling up players who are both fit and in form.

Scaloni’s approach and final call

It’s important to note that this is only a preliminary squad. Scaloni has emphasized that only those who are 100% ready—both physically and mentally—will be part of the final list. With many players also competing in the Club World Cup, rotation and recovery are key factors.

Still, with Messi back in the fold, Argentina heads into this double date of qualifiers not just with confidence, but also with the reassurance of having their leader on the field once again.
