Hodgson returns to Crystal Palace as manager

Crystal Palace have turned to a familiar face to help right the ship. The south London club have appointed Roy Hodgson as manager until the end of the season.

Hodgson was previously at the helm with the Premier League team from 2017 to 2021. Upon departing the club, he was eventually replaced by Patrick Vieira. Now Hodgson takes over for the Frenchman.

Hodgson happy to be back at Crystal Palace

“It is a privilege to be asked to return to the club, which has always meant so much to me, and to be given the important task of turning the team’s fortunes around,” Hodgson said after signing on as Palace manager yet again. “Our sole objective now is to start winning matches, and to get the points necessary to ensure our Premier League status.”

“Crystal Palace is known for its fighting spirit, and I have no doubt that all our supporters will fight with us, beginning with the visit of Leicester City a week Saturday.”

Vieira was fired last Friday after a string a poor performances. In fact, the former Arsenal great failed to win a match over his last 12 fixtures in charge of the club. The goals seemingly dried up under Vieira during the current campaign. Despite implementing an initially pleasing style of play, Palace managed just 21 goals in 27 top flight games this season.

Coach takes on his 24th managerial job

Palace are now banking on Hodgson’s experience to avoid relegation. “I would like to welcome Roy and Ray back to the club. We are obviously in a very challenging period but we believe that Roy’s and Ray’s experience, knowledge of the club and players, alongside Paddy can help fulfill the immediate requirement of keeping us in the league,” stated club chairman Steve Parish.

Nevertheless, the now 75-year-old coach was in a similar situation last season. Hodgson took over at Watford in January of 2022 to help the club avoid relegation. The Hornets, however, finished 19th with the Englishman and were relegated to the Championship.

Hodgson will now get the international break to work with his players. Palace’s next game is not until April 1 when it hosts Leicester City.
