After weeks of speculation that Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) would plan to get David Luiz from Chelsea, the news is finally official as the defender completed a move to the Ligue 1 champions in a five-year-deal.
Reports are that the transfer is for £50million and, if so, the Blues easily won this deal. Luiz is a talented technical player that is good moving forward and attacking but his decision making and judgement as a central defender on the club level is questionable. Jose Mourinho utilized the Brazilian international mostly as a defensive midfielder this season because the 27-year-old could not beat out Gary Cahill and John Terry to play in central defense. For his national team, Luiz looks like a much better player in that position and PSG hopes his partnership with captain Thiago Silva will translate from the national team to the club as the side hopes to be serious contenders in the Champions League next season.
“Thank you Chelsea for three years and a half of a great partnership. I gained friends, matches and titles that will always live on in my memory. I thank the staff, players and fans! Geezers! This story wouldn’t have been possible without you. I am sad to leave because of the friends that will stay but I am happy to be on my way to another big European club and to go to a city that has always fascinated me. This is a new stage and new challenges and I am sure that together we will go even further. Allez Paris!,” said Luiz to the Brazilian paper Globo Esporte on May 24.
Luiz leaving means Chelsea needs a central defender with experience to cover Cahill and Terry. In January, they signed 19-year-old Kurt Zouma from the French side Saint-Etienne and he has a lot of potential but he’s not ready to be a consistent first team player for the Blues.
The 2009-10 Primeira Liga Player of the Year’s arrival to Paris means the club are most likely to get rid of his compatriot Marquinhos even though PSG signed the 20-year-old last year for approximately £25 million last year. Barcelona are favorites to take advantage and pick up the youngster to be the central defender they desperately need.
Chelsea have already made good business of the money gained from the Luiz deal as they signed Cesc Fabregas yesterday.
