Los Angeles (AFP) – Anthony Hudson was sacked as coach of Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids on Wednesday, the league’s only winless squad naming Conor Casey as interim coach.
Hudson, a 38-year-old American who guided New Zealand’s failed bid to reach the 2018 World Cup before taking over the Rapids in November 2017, went 8-26 with nine drawn guiding the club, including an 0-7 with two drawn start to the 2019 campaign.
“We appreciate Anthony’s commitment to the Rapids organization during his time with the club,” Rapids vice president and general manager Padraig Smith said. “This is a pivotal period in the development of our team and it’s in the club’s best interest to make a change now. We still have a lot of season left and we look forward to getting back on track.”
Hudson also coached Bahrain’s national team in 2013 and 2014.
Casey, who debuts in the interim post Friday against Vancouver, played for Bundesliga clubs Borussia Dortmund and Mainz 05 before joining MLS, first with Toronto and then with his hometown club, the Rapids.
Casey played 119 matches for the Rapids, helping the team capture the 2010 MLS Cup. He finished his playing days with Philadelphia and Columbus before rejoining the Rapids in 2017 as an assistant coach.
