USA to host major tournament in 2025 as dry run for World Cup

Mexican Football Federation president Yon de Luisa has revealed that the United States, Canada, and Mexico will host a significant tournament in 2025. As we already know, the three North American nations are hosting the 2026 World Cup as well. However, the summer 2025 competition will be seen as a dry run the for the World Cup.

World Cup dry run tournament appears to be national teams

While some have suggested that the tournament could just be the Club World Cup, journalist Jon Arnold isn’t so sure. Arnold claims that de Luisa spoke about the 2025 tournament in relation to the national team. This would suggest that it will be an international tournament involving select national teams from around the world.

CONCACAF and FIFA will partner for the rumored competition.

De Luisa made the comments while speaking about significant changes to Mexican soccer. Mexico was knocked out of the recent World Cup at the group stage. El Tri finished level on points with Poland in Group C, but the Europeans had a better goal difference. As a result, Mexico manager Tata Martino did not have his contract extended to remain in the role. Possible tweaks to Liga MX were also discussed including the most likely return of promotion and relegation.

2025 Club World Cup could still be held in U.S.

Nevertheless, the Club World Cup could also be played in the United States in 2025 as well. A host nation for the club competition has not yet been announced just yet. However, the U.S. is reportedly in contention to arrange the tournament. FIFA clearly wants soccer to keep growing in the U.S. ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino revealed plans to expand the 2025 Club World Cup to 32 teams last month. The idea was met with strong disproval from the players union and leagues around the globe. However, the move to expand the competition is not yet set in stone. The six confederations would need to approve the expansion first.
