TV Rating For Premier League Season Finale Up 79% Compared to Last Year

NBCUniversal scored a big gain in its viewership of 10 games on 10 networks on Sunday with a 1.56 metered market rating when combined for all games, according to The Nielsen Company. This number is up 79% from the previous 2011-2012’s Championship Sunday coverage that featured six games on six channels across FOX and ESPN networks with a viewership of 0.87% and the 2012-2013 coverage that featured only two games on two different channels.

NBC featured pre-match previews as well as post-match coverage talking about the tremendous Premier League season as a whole as well as a special featuring the champions, Manchester City, and their 2-0 victory against West Ham United. Sunday marked the second time Manchester City has won the Premier League in the past three seasons. Coverage also focused on Liverpool who secured second place after beating Newcastle 2-1.

The 10 Premier League matches were broadcasted simultaneously on 10 different networks, all owned by NBCUniversal. The ambitious broadcast was unprecedented in the United States and NBCUniversal did not want to make the viewers decide what game to watch by only showing one or two games, instead deciding to show all 10 games.

The boost in ratings is a positive one for NBCUniversal who purchased the rights to the Premier League in 2012 and retain the rights until the end of the 2015-16 season.
