Saka and Kane help England breeze past Ukraine

England made it two wins out of two as they beat Ukraine 2-0 in Euro 2024 Qualifying Group C.

Following their 2-1 win over Italy on Thursday, the Three Lions made light work of the Ukrainians at Wembley Stadium on Sunday evening.

Kane extends the scoring record

Harry Kane opened the scoring in the 37th minute when Bukayo Saka found the Tottenham Hotspur striker at the back post who duly scored his 55th goal for his country.

Kane had earlier become England’s top scorer during the encounter against Italy, and was honored with a golden boot at kickoff.

Saka doubled the lead three minutes later with a thundering effort right from the edge of the box to double England’s lead on the day. Ukraine carved out few clear-cut opportunities as Gareth Southgate’s team enjoyed themselves.

James Maddison could have made it 3-0 for the hosts in the 51st minute after some lovely interplay but the Leicester City midfielder smashed his effort over the bar.

With Phil Foden ruled out due to injury, Maddison showed why he would have a stake in the starting eleven with a professional performance.

The visitors did enjoy a spell of decent possession midway in the second half but were once again threadbare upfront, hardly troubling Jordan Pickford in the England goal.

Debut for Ivan Toney

Ivan Toney came on as a substitute in the 81st minute to make his England debut as the hosts held on to their 2-0 lead at the full-time whistle. Toney became the first Brentford player to play for England since 1939.

Jude Bellingham, who once again shone in the middle said of the victory, It was important that we followed up a really good result in Italy with another win tonight.

When you do that it feels rewarding, because it’s a short camp, short turnaround, and you have to take in information really quickly. The boys did that well.”
