Rashford sinks Brentford as Man Utd move into top 4

Manchester United beat Brentford in a Premier League matchup at Old Trafford on Wednesday thanks to a lone goal by Marcus Rashford. The hosts needed to bounce back after a few disappointing top flight results. In fact, United entered Wednesday not having scored a league goal since February, a three-match span. The lackluster goal output saw the club fall down to fifth in the Premier League table.

Also, this was a chance to avenge the famous 4-0 loss in London against Brentford in the second game of the season.

However, fans inside Old Trafford didn’t need to wait very long to finally see their team score a goal on Wednesday. The aforementioned Rashford put his team ahead in the 28th minute with a clever finish.

Rashford nets 15th EPL goal of the season as United defeats Brentford

After a corner kick was headed away by a Brentford defender, the ball fell straight to Antony. The attacker sent the ball back into the box where he found Marcel Sabitzer in a nice position. Sabitzer headed it down to Rashford just a few yards from goal and the England international wouldn’t miss from there. Rashford neatly fired the ball past David Raya and into the roof of the net.

United dominated the first half of the game. They had 73% possession and 12 more shot attempts compared to Brentford in the opening period. The visitors couldn’t seem to get anything going and did not record a shot until just a few minutes from the break. The shot, which Ivan Toney sent way over the bar, was Brentford’s only attempt in the half.

De Gea preserves victory with massive save

Brentford did, however, start the second 45 minutes a bit stronger. While they were not exactly the better team of the latter half, the game was certainly much more even. Both clubs had multiple scoring chances throughout the second period, but the visitors had the best opportunity. Substitute Kevin Schade had a glorious one-on-one chance saved well by United goalkeeper David de Gea.

Nevertheless, the match ended 1-0 to the hosts. The victory helped United jump Tottenham Hotspur in the table. The Red Devils now sit fourth, three points ahead of the north London club, and United has a game in hand on Spurs. Brentford remains ninth despite the loss at Old Trafford.
