PSG prospect Adrien Rabiot will seek a loan move in the January window

Highly-rated France U-21 international Adrien Rabiot has asked Paris Saint-Germain for a January loan to gain more playing time. Recently speaking with French website Telefoot, Rabiot stated:

“I’ve asked the president for a loan move in January if my time on the field is insufficient. It’s something that he can’t refuse me – I know he likes me very much. When you train all week, you want to be on the field. Sometimes it’s not possible and it’s frustrating.”

With PSG’s talented trio of Blaise Matuidi, Thiago Motta and Marco Verratti all currently ahead of Rabiot in the central midfield pecking order, it’s no surprise that the young Frenchman is not receiving a significant amount of minutes. Rabiot has managed to be selected in PSG’s starting XI just 10 times out of the Parisians first 23 total matches during the current campaign.

While he is not playing as much as he would like, Rabiot has received a bit of a boost in playing time due to an injury suffered to Verratti last month. The Italian international has missed the last six matches for PSG but did return to training at the end of the last week. With the Italian nearly full fitness, Rabiot could be relegated to the bench once again.

Looking ahead to the January transfer market, the young midfielder will certainly have suitors. Tottenham Hotspur is one club that is reportedly interested in Rabiot. However, if Rabiot were to move to Spurs, he would have to scrap for playing time with Eric Dier, Moussa Dembele, Dele Alli and Ryan Mason. Although the Spurs quartet is not as highly-regarded as PSG’s aforementioned trio, Rabiot’s appetite for a secure place could be too much for a dogfight at Tottenham.

Another possible January destination for Rabiot could be Tottenham’s bitter north London rivals: Arsenal. The Gunners are in desperate need of a quality defensive midfielder ever since Francis Coquelin went down with a knee injury in November. Coquelin, a fellow Frenchman, is said to possibly be out until March with ligament damage. Arsenal also lost central midfielder Santi Cazorla to a similar knee injury, as well.

The north London outfit has been relying on 31-year-old Mathieu Flamini since Coquelin went down; however, Rabiot could give the Gunners a bit more stability in the middle of the pitch. A loan deal for the PSG player could also be a solid backup plan for manager Arsene Wenger, as it is widely known that the Frenchman is in the market for a new midfielder.

If prices for players such as William Carvalho, Lars Bender, Christoph Kramer, or Granit Xhaka prove to be too expensive, or if clubs choose not to sell one of their players, a potential loan agreement for Rabiot could be a very wise decision for Wenger.
