Liverpool Manager Brendan Rodgers Will Agree 4-Year Contract Extension, Says Report

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has reportedly agreed to a contract extension that will keep him at Anfield until 2018, according to a report in The Guardian newspaper. Rodgers will officially sign the contract extension after the season ends on Sunday.

According to his current deal with Liverpool, owned by Boston-based Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool FC are required to inform Rodgers this season if they want to extend his original three-year deal to a four-year deal.

In his second year in charge of the club, Rodgers has made Liverpool a contender for the league title for the first time in 24 years, completely turning around their 7th place finish from last season. The season took a turn after Liverpool’s loss against Chelsea was followed by a draw against Crystal Palace but the owners and fans of the Reds remain optimistic for future seasons and potential championships.

Liverpool play Newcastle at home on Sunday and have not completely given up on the hopes of a Championship despite being behind Manchester City by 9 goals. The Reds will be hoping for another interesting turn this season.

This week, the team celebrated their first end of the season awards, and when asked about the season, Rodgers said,

“To be the club that is top of the league by one point with one week to go, and you never know what might happen, has taken a huge effort. The only thing I will promise is that while I am here we’ll fight for our lives. Our season doesn’t finish until after Newcastle.”

The last time Liverpool won a Premier League title was 1990. And despite more games remaining in the season, Rodgers admitted defeat after Liverpool tied Crystal Palace 3-3. Rodgers shows great leadership and potential for growth, putting the team before himself by delaying contract talks in order to focus on finishing the season as strong as possible.
