Comeback kings Leicester City continue to defy explanation

Leicester City have gone from being relegation candidates last season to comeback kings this season, a process that began toward the end of last season.

With Leicester glaring at relegation, the Foxes found it within themselves to launch one of the Premier League’s greatest escapes. In their last 10 games of the 2014-2015 season, Leicester won seven and drew once, with their two losses in that time coming away to European qualifiers Chelsea and Tottenham.

They carried this rich vein of form into the new season, winning seven drawing four times in their first 12 games, with their only loss coming at home to Arsenal. As a result, Leicester is in third place.

Yes, you read that correctly. Third in the division are the first quarter of the season.

But a tag like comeback kings doesn’t come easily, so how have they managed to stake that claim? Leicester have amassed 10 points from losing position this season, the highlight coming against Aston Villa, where they were trailing 2-0 after 63 minutes. But late goals from Ritchie de Laet, Jamie Vardy and Nathan Dyer ensured a memorable comeback. In the 12 league games Leicester has played this season, they have scored an impressive 25 goals.

With this impressive run of form, thousands of questions run through a Premier League fan’s mind, such as:

Is Leicester city going to challenge for Europe this season?

At the moment, Leicester City seem to overcome every hurdle. They don’t seem afraid of anyone, and their direct attacking soccer has been lighting up the league. Should Leicester continue with this form, you would not put it past them to qualify for the Champions League.

What is the secret behind this upturn of form?

Is it about the players taking matters in into their own hands? Vardy and Riyad Mahrez have both been outstanding, with the duo contributing 19 of the team’s 25 goals.

Or is it their new manager Claudio Ranieri? Through you could argue that this form started last season under Nigel Pearson, before Ranieri was appointed manager.

Could it be the fear of the drop zone that is behind Leicester City’s sensational start? Or does the inspiration arise from their astonishing comeback against Manchester United last season?

Only time will tell if Leicester City are going keep up this kind of form. For now, we are left asking questions, with Leicester returning to action Saturday at Newcastle.
