Hudson names 23-man squad for USMNT in Continental Clasico

With a newly formed Continental Clasico just one week away, USMNT interim head coach Anthony Hudson picked his squad to face Mexico. This is not an international break, so many of the European-based playera are unavailable. In fact, of the 23 players in the squad, only one represents a club in Europe. All but three are from MLS clubs.

That one player from Europe is Sergiño Dest, who plays for AC Milan in Serie A. Dest has not been desired by Milan in the current campaign. Despite the Italians competing for top four placement and playing in the Champions League quarterfinals, Dest is out of favor. He has not played since late January at club level, but he did make a national team appearance in late March.

Another player that is not from an MLS club is Alan Soñora, who plays for FC Juárez in Liga MX. Soñora has made two previous appearances with the USMNT, both coming in friendlies at the beginning of 2023.

Finally, the last player that is not from MLS is Joshua Wynder. Wynder plays for Louisville City in the USL Championship. Wynder is hoping to make his first appearance for the USMNT, as he represents Louisville and the entire USL Championship.

Almost entirely MLS players in squad

The 20 other players in the squad are all MLS players. Nine of those featured in the World Cup squad for the USMNT at Qatar 2022. Those are Aaron Long, Shaq Moore, Walker Zimmerman, DeAndre Yedlin, Kellyn Acosta, Cristian Roldan, Paul Arriola, Jesús Ferreira and Jordan Morris.

Joining Wynder in the list of players hoping to make their debuts is fellow defender Caleb Wiley. The Atlanta United defender traditionally plays left back, but he can also fill in at left wing. Two goalkeepers, Drake Callender and Roman Celentano, are also rearing for a debut.

Matt Miazga is back in the USMNT squad for the first time since defeating Mexico in the 2021 Nations League Final.

He, along with the rest of the USMNT squad, take on Mexico in Las Vegas on April 19 in the Continental Clasico. Coverage is available in the United States on TBS for English-language coverage.
