FOX Soccer Plus on PlayStation Vue rolling out to major US cities

Sony recently announced at the E3 Electronic Entertainment Expo conference that they will be introducing FOX Soccer Plus to their Internet TV streaming service, the PlayStation Vue, for $14.99 a month or $12.99 if you’re a PlayStationPlus member. The FOX Soccer Plus service is offered a-la-carte on top of the $49-69 monthly subscription services Playstation Vue charges.

Streaming services for the PlayStation Vue are currently available in only a handful of cities including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and San Francisco but Sony plans to expand in the future with the focus on large cities first.

The PlayStation Vue began beta testing in November of 2014 and became available in March of this year, providing an option to Playstation 3 and 4 owners who are interested in ditching their traditional cable services.

FOX Soccer Plus launched in 2010 and is a channel dedicated to soccer and rugby throughout the year. Specifically FOX owns the rights to the UEFA Champions League, England’s FA Cup, UEFA Europa League, Scottish Premier League and the Australia A-League as well as the 2015 Women’s World Cup.

Implementing FOX Soccer Plus into the PlayStation Vue service could earn Sony a different section of the PlayStation audience that might not have been inclined to switch from traditional TV providers to the Vue. The FIFA video game series is hugely popular in the United States and combining soccer coverage with their large catalog of channels and on-demand TV could influence some of the video game players to switch.

Although the streaming service is only available in certain cities, the popularity of streaming services continues to grow with the younger generation entering the work force who are reluctant to sign up for a TV subscription through a cable or satellite provider.

However, FOX Soccer Plus as a service offers very little value unless you’re a fan of watching rugby. Despite its name, FOX Soccer Plus doesn’t offer enough convincing reasons to subscribe to the network for soccer coverage alone. Plus, on top of that, the $15 monthly rate on top of the $49-69 PlayStation Vue subscription cost makes this an even more unappealing offering.
