ESPN SportsCenter mistakenly claims Tottenham wins the Premier League

ESPN’s SportsCenter, the most popular sports news program on US television, made a huge mistake on Monday evening when one of its on-air talent claimed that Tottenham Hotspur, not Leicester, had won the 2015/16 Premier League title.

The mistake was made on-air on ESPN not one but twice as the sports network showed footage of Leicester City supporters jumping up and down and celebrating.

“This is the reaction today when Tottenham won the EPL,” the on-air host said, adding “Darren Rovell will have reaction from all over as Tottenham wins the EPL.”

Here’s the footage of the incident:

According to Twitter user @SoccerisArt, when ESPN returned from commercial, the sports network didn’t correct the fact that it just made a huge gaffe.

Of course, it was Leicester City that won the Premier League after Spurs was unable to beat Chelsea, thus making it mathematically impossible for the Lilywhites to surpass Leicester with two games remaining in the 2015/16 season.
