With the 2024–25 season nearing its end, Bayern Munich are dealing with multiple expiring contracts, including that of club legend Thomas Muller. As part of their ongoing rebuild, the club is reportedly preparing to make a surprising decision regarding the veteran’s future.

Bayern have entered a transitional phase both on and off the pitch. Among the most high-profile moves in this process was appointing Vincent Kompany as head coach. However, Muller has seen limited playing time under the new manager, prompting the board to reassess his role.

According to Sport BILD and Kicker, Bayern have already decided not to renew Thomas Muller‘s contract. The German outlets report that the 35-year-old was informed of the decision weeks ago following a meeting with sporting director Max Eberl.

The decision stems not only from Muller’s reduced minutes this season but also from Bayern’s financial strategy. Muller remains one of the highest earners in the squad, with bonuses reportedly taking his annual compensation up to €17 million. With his on-pitch role diminished, the club sees his salary as no longer justifiable.

Muller joined Bayern’s academy from TSV Pähl in 2000 and has spent his entire professional career with the Bavarian giants. He has become a symbol of the club, winning 32 trophies — including 12 Bundesliga titles, two UEFA Champions League crowns, and two FIFA Club World Cups.

He also holds the record for most appearances in Bayern Munich history, with 741 games, surpassing Sepp Maier (709). Muller is also the club’s all-time assist leader (272) and ranks third in all-time goals scored with 247, behind Gerd Muller (570) and Robert Lewandowski (344).

Muller still has a future at Bayern

At 35, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season, it’s unclear whether Muller will continue playing elsewhere or hang up his boots. Regardless of his decision, Bayern intend to keep him connected to the club.

According to Kicker, Muller has been contractually promised a farewell match. Additionally, Bayern reportedly view him as a future club ambassador or even a potential executive, ensuring that his legacy at the club will endure long after his playing days are over.
