Amazon Prime becoming a must-have for soccer fans

Recently in the United Kingdom, Amazon Prime secured a three-year broadcasting deal to show Premier League matches on their streaming service until 2022. A yearly subscription to Amazon Prime costs £79 a year, or £7.99 a month, and there is a 30-day free trial available to customers. This option isn’t available in the United States yet, but soccer fans still have plenty of content to view on Amazon Prime.

The Kicks only lasted for one season, but the 10-episode show is a nice family show based around the beautiful game. Main character Devin Burke and her family move across the country to California and Devin has to adjust to playing for a new team that isn’t as talented as her previous side. She also has to fit in at her new school but has to be a leader on the pitch. It’s a difficult balance that she attempts to get control of as the show progresses.

This Is Football is a powerful six-part documentary that captures how special soccer can truly be. The series covers a wide range of topics including the youngest professional referee in South African history, Iceland’s first appearance in the men’s World Cup in 2018, Lionel Messi’s ascension into becoming arguably the greatest soccer player of all time and even a soccer club made up of blind people. The stories are told so well that you don’t have to be a soccer fan to feel inspired or moved.

All or Nothing: Manchester City follows the club during the 2017-18 season. The eight-part documentary provides behind the scenes ground-breaking insight to one of the biggest clubs in the world. Manager Pep Guardiola, members of the training staff, coaching staff, club executives, players and even owner Sheikh Mansour all make multiple appearances throughout the series. During this season, the club won the Premier League in record fashion with 100 points and also won the Carabao Cup.

Oh My Goal: Soccer Stories is a show that gives viewers perspective behind some of the biggest goals scored in the history of the game. The episodes are not long and ranges between four to 10 minutes. One story the series tells is how Chelsea legend Didier Drogba helped to end a civil war in his native Ivory Coast.

Inside Borussia Dortmund is a four-part documentary series that cover the German club during the 2018-19 season. The show has subtitles in English available to non-German speakers. Unlike Manchester City during their series, Die Schwarzgelben did not win any trophies during their campaign so the series provides insight to how clubs are when they did not accomplish the objectives they had for the season.

Make Us Dream is a documentary on Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard. The film shows how the 2004-05 Champions League winner was raised, joined the Reds academy at nine-years-old, became an icon at the club when the team was on the decline and never left during his prime even though he had plenty of offers. It gives a unique perspective on the burdens that comes with being the face of a franchise.

Take Us Home: Leeds United is a six-part series narrated by Academy Award-winning actor Russell Crowe. The documentary follows the club during the 2018-19 season when new owner Andrea Radrizzani recruited one of the best and most influential managers, Marcelo Bielsa, to lead the Whites back to the Premier League.

El Corazón de Sergio Ramos is an eight-part series that provides perspective on one of the most controversial players of his generation. The captain of Real Madrid might be known for his red card record, aggressive play and knack for scoring timely goals, but the show succeeds in showing viewers how Sergio Ramos is off the pitch. We see the World Cup winner’s life with his wife and three sons, his upbringing in Seville, how hard he trains to maintain his status and even his love for music. Subtitles are available for non-Spanish speakers.

While U.S. soccer fans may not have the ability to watch Premier League games on Amazon Prime yet, there is plenty of original content to keep lovers of the beautiful game satisfied.
