Lionel Messi is expected to be in the starting lineup once again when Inter Miami visit Philadelphia Union at Subaru Park, as the Herons look to bounce back from a rough stretch of results.
The timing matters for Miami, who are coming off a lopsided 4-1 defeat to Nashville SC on August 15 that dropped them further behind the Eastern Conference leaders, though they still sit second in the standings.
Messi had a chance to pull Miami level at 1-1 from the penalty spot in that match, but saw his effort saved, missing his third straight spot kick, a stretch that also includes penalties missed for Argentina against Austria and Egypt at this summer’s World Cup. It’s the first time since 2014 he’s failed to convert three consecutive penalties.
Philadelphia, by contrast, arrive in strong form. The Union have won their last two matches, most recently a 3-2 victory over New York City FC that moved them up to 13th in the Eastern Conference, and they’ll be eager to extend that run against one of the league’s marquee sides.
Inter Miami projected lineup
For this match, coach Guillermo Hoyos will be without a few key names. Rodrigo De Paul won’t be available due to yellow card accumulation, while German Berterame hasn’t received clearance from MLS and remains a confirmed absence under concussion protocol.
