Antonio Conte

Conte continues to stall on new Spurs contract

Antonio Conte is continuing to delay on committing to a contract future with Spurs. Last year, the Italian coach only signed an 18-month contract when he arrived at the club. His current contract expires at the end of June. Spurs do have an option to extend the coach’s stay. However, this is a short-term solution.

Spurs hierarchy obviously wants Conte to stay, and stay long term. However, Conte has not agreed a new deal just yet. The Mail is reporting that Spurs have upped their offer to help persuade their coach to remain at the helm. However, the supposed $1.2 million annual raise hasn’t made Conte budge.

Contract negotiations between Conte and Spurs stall

Discussions between Conte and club chairman Daniel Levy have been ongoing for months now. This includes during the World Cup in which Spurs, like other teams, have had a break from busy schedules. However, these talks have not materialized any real contract breakthroughs.

Conte currently receives about $18.2 million per year to manage Spurs. The Athletic has recently reported that the coach would like to see his salary rise to about $24 million annually to remain at the job. Nevertheless, it appears as if money isn’t the only factor in Conte’s decision.

Conte is used to winning titles

Ambition is clearly important to Conte. He wants to win trophies. The Italian previously won major titles during his spells at Juventus, Chelsea, and Inter Milan. Though his time with Tottenham has been short so far, his team has not really even come close to a major trophy just yet.

January signings could ultimately be a major element to Conte committing to a new contract. The coach has made it clear that he wants reinforcements as soon as possible. Spurs do have a solid core group at the club, but a few high profile signings next month could take the team to where Conte is used to being.
